Such a beautiful tribute to the complexity of a revolution far from over. Siam and Amal had the courage to film among Police officers and during very critical life risking moments. Mohamed Siam Amal is a feisty teenager growing up in post-revolution Egypt while they’re both undergoing a tremendous change. Within a constant political turmoil, Amal searches for her place, identity and sexuality in a patriarchal society. Amal Five years in the life of a fearless girl that grows up amidst the protests on Tahrir Square, and searches for her identity as an adult woman in a refounded, yet steadily country. Her name, Amal, means “hope.” Synopsis Amal is 14 years old when she ends up on Tahrir Square during the Egyptian revolution, after the death of her boyfriend in the Port Said Stadium riot.

This coming-of-age film follows her over the years after the revolution. As the film cuts between the unfolding current events and Amal’s rapidly changing life and appearance, we see her searching for her own identity in a country in transition.

When I met Mohamed Siam at the Leipzig Documentary Film Festival in November 2014, it took him all of five minutes to get me excited about his “Amal” project. And I was not the only one: the Robert-Bosch-Stiftung has now paid tribute to the film at the Berlinale. What started out as five minutes back in Leipzig turned into nearly an hour.

A defiant force of nature masking a deeper vulnerability behind a bolshie, devil-may-care façade, Amal has experienced more in her young life as a child and teenager in “Amal” received a number of awards such as Robert Bosch Film Prize, the AfriDocs prize at Durban FilmMart and Thessaloniki Docs-In-Progress award. Siam is a member of a number of committees and associations of documentaries in the Arab region, and is a lecturer in universities in New York, Paris, Beirut and Egypt.
